Meet the 2019 Scholars

"Choose one inspirational quote or motto that has helped you throughout your journey with cystic fibrosis. How do you live by your quote or motto and how has it motivated you to accomplish your goals?"

For years, Claire Wineland has been my biggest inspiration. She helped me through major CF struggles, including a full year of IV antibiotics freshman year. I find Claire amazing because she was able to be empowered by cystic fibrosis, not held back by it. My favorite quote of hers is “death is inevitable, living a life you are proud of is something you can control.” This quote inspires me because I saw her truly live like this, it wasn’t just a thing she said. It’s made me realize that yes, I have a terminal illness, but that doesn’t mean I can’t still be proud of my accomplishments, even if it’s something as simple as good grades. For a while in high school, I felt defeated, like there was no point in trying to go to college. I still worked hard in classes and made honor roll every semester, but I began to wonder what I was working towards. That’s when I found Claire. I realized my illness can empower me. Not only was I working for good grades to be proud of myself and achieve a good future, but I also began to get more involved in the CF community. Because of Claire I’ve had amazing opportunities, such as being on the Cystic Fibrosis Adult Advisory Council, writing for multiple organizations, and attending conferences across the country. Claire’s quote has inspired me to live a full life that I am proud of, a life that I actually want to live.
