"Choose one inspirational quote or motto that has helped you throughout your journey with cystic fibrosis. How do you live by your quote or motto and how has it motivated you to accomplish your goals?"

“I may have Cystic Fibrosis, but Cystic Fibrosis does not have me” As I have grown up, this quote has constantly been floating around in my household. Originally hearing it from my parents, we are a family that uses it to challenge each of our lives. Whether it be taking my medications, doing my breathing treatments, or attending doctor appointments, having self-responsibility is the only way to stay in control of a disease that can easily spiral downward. One of the largest turning points that I had was after a week-long tune-up in the hospital over the summer a few years back. Although this may be common for many living with Cystic Fibrosis, it had been my first. Cystic Fibrosis had taken the wheel. I had become lazy with my own care because I had been so healthy my whole life. At that point, I was not living. My illness directed me to where I needed to go and I gave in to it. This quote became a kick in the butt to push me to regain control. Now I am back in control. I keep ahead of my health so that I can really own my life. In my family we do not call Cystic Fibrosis a disability, but rather a challenge that is meant to be overcome. I know that this perseverance is what will continue to inspire me to remain as healthy as possible.
