"Describe a defining moment in your journey with CF that sparked personal growth or resilience. How did this experience affect you and what did you learn from this moment? "
Defining Moments That Sparked Personal Growth and Resilience. It is difficult to pinpoint just one thing that has impacted me the most, but more so, a group of things. Since I was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis, I have been very active in volunteering to participate with researchers who have worked tirelessly to improve the lives of patients who have CF. I have participated in countless research studies, where I have been able to help these doctors learn more about CF. I am currently in two different studies where they do everything from test how Cystic Fibrosis affects how I exercise, to studying how well certain organs in my body work. While many patients notice that their lungs are most affected by CF, the pancreas is also highly affected. I am very honored to know that I have been a part of the ongoing battle to fight against this disease. I know I may never be cured of CF, but I volunteer in all these studies in hope that future CF patients can be freed from the burden. I hope that by contributing in this small way, sometime in the future, people will not have to go through the same struggles as I have. Although all of this seems very difficult, and I will admit, it is not fun; I have been blessed that my organs function more than those of other CF patients. As I have looked at what others with my disease deal with, I am truly thankful that I am not as affected as them. This has influenced me to step up and participate in these studies in hopes that conditions will improve for them. This has had a significant impact on how I live my life, and how I view many things. It has given me a sense of optimism, and the knowledge that I can do anything I put my mind to. And when I begin attending the University of Georgia, I hope to use this same optimism and determination to pursue a degree in Animal Science with an emphasis on precision agriculture to help this industry in the United States continue to be at the forefront of technology. As I embark on this journey, I also hope to continue to have the opportunity to help others and give back to the community as I pass on the flame of hope and hard work to others. I was also recently able to complete the PACK test for Georgia Department of Natural Resources. There are two different PACK tests. The one I completed requires you to walk two miles in under thirty minutes with a 25-pound vest. This is very strenuous being that you are required to walk and not run. I completed this test wearing boots, thick pants, and a long-sleeved black shirt; while most wear shorts, t-shirt, and tennis shoes. I am extremely honored to have accomplished this despite having CF.
