"Describe a defining moment in your journey with CF that sparked personal growth or resilience. How did this experience affect you and what did you learn from this moment?"

As a female college student and athlete with a mild version of cystic fibrosis (CF), my journey has been a mix of challenges and triumphs. Yet, one particular moment stands out, marking a significant turning point in my personal growth and resilience. It was the beginning of my freshman year at Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston, a city vastly different from the small town where I grew up. Despite the chaos of my new city life, I was eager to immerse myself in the college experience and continue playing soccer, a passion I've held since childhood. However, early on, my CF symptoms flared up. Though not as severe as some other's experiences with CF, it still disrupted my routine and required extra attention. In addition, at the same time, I also experienced an allergic reaction to a new medication I had just started. Both issues made adjusting to the demands of college life while managing my health feel overwhelming at times. Amid doctor's appointments, treatments, and missed classes and practices, I felt a wave of frustration and doubt wash over me. It seemed like CF was determined to disrupt my plans and hold me back. But in that moment of uncertainty, I made a conscious decision to push forward with determination and resilience. I refused to let CF define my college experience or hinder my passion for soccer. Instead, I found ways to balance my health needs with my academic and athletic pursuits by seeking support from my coaches, teammates, and healthcare providers. They were a crucial part of a network of allies who, along with my family back home, helped me navigate the challenges I faced. On the soccer field, I found comfort and strength, channeling my energy into the game and drawing inspiration from my teammates. Soccer became not just a sport but a source of empowerment, reminding me of my resilience and determination to overcome obstacles. In addition to my athletics, I prioritized self-care and balance in my daily life. I made time for rest and relaxation, and for exploring the Boston area with my teammates. This helped me both physically and mentally, ensuring that I had the strength to persevere. This experience taught me important lessons about adaptability and the power of community. It showed me that while CF may present challenges, it does not define my capabilities or limit my potential. With courage and determination, I continue to navigate the complexities of life with CF, embracing each day as an opportunity to grow stronger and thrive.
